An effective tree and shrub spraying program requires in in-depth knowledge of the types of pests that plague plants in New Hampshire. A lot of money can be spent applying the wrong product at the wrong time or using the wrong method. My degree in Plant Biology, UNH ’89, allows me to correctly diagnose insect and disease issues and develop a proper program to control the infestation.
The Healthy Tree and Shrub spray program. At Green Grass Lawn Care, we have the knowledge and experience to know what works and what doesn’t. Foliar feeding insects are especially voracious and do a lot of damage quickly. Fortunately, our four-step insect and disease management program for trees and shrubs is very effective at controlling these pests:
- Aphids
- Boxelder Bug
- Gypsy moth Caterpillar
- Holly Leaf Spot
- Lacewing Fly
- Pine Sawfly
- Tent Caterpillar
- Winter Moth
Some insects cannot be controlled with topical sprays. The most effective method for these pests is a soil injection (or soil drench) of a systemic insect control because they are feeding directly on stems or inside the leaf. Systemic controls will kill the insect as they feed on the host plant, as opposed to a topical spray that kills on contact.
Consistent with our IPM principles, our spray techs inspect the property for other insect and disease problems in each visit. If we find one of the following pests, we will recommend a soil drench or injection program for that specific plant:
- Bronze Birch Borer
- Elm Bark Beetle
- Emerald Ash Borer
- Euonymous Scale
- Hemlock Woolly Adelgid
- Leaf Miners
- Pine Weevils
The efficacy of a foliar insect spray is about two to four weeks. Our initial spray covers all of your ornamental trees and shrubs. With our standard four-step insect and disease management program, you can expect to see our techs every 4-6 weeks from springtime through late summer. Trees and shrubs that have been weakened from an infestation may need a boost from our deep root fertilizing program.
