Ginkgo biloba…The Maidenhair tree is native to China, Japan, and the Koreas. The genus is thought to be over 200 million years old and individual trees can grow for over 2500 years. Ginkgo biloba are unique in that they lose all their leaves usually in one day. Many UNH grads have taken part in the bet to guess what day the leaves will drop on the tree next to James Hall.
The tree is very city friendly. It is drought tolerant, insect resistant, disease resistant, and due to the deep roots, snowplow damage resistant. As a young tree the crown doesn’t spread too far from the trunk and it gets wider with age.
The tree has deep roots in ancient and modern medicine. There are a few positive effects and some adverse effects. Check with your doctor before taking any supplement. The Ginkgo is also my daughter Eilise’s favorite tree….
