Red Maple (Acer Rubrum)
Just a beautiful tree and it epitomizes fall in New England. The bright red color stands out in the crowd!
I chose this tree because I already have an order to plant two of them on a commercial property. Although this tree is generally fast-growing, we are going to put the tree on an aggressive fertilizer program to get it to catch up in size to two others that were planted about 15 years ago!
Red Maple grows well in all types of conditions, wet soils, dry soils, poor soil conditions. When choosing a plant, look for a lateral branch structure and avoid weak forks that can split under snow or ice. This tree also has a strong, shallow root system. This can be problematic if it has been in a pot too long – the roots can grow around the trunk and eventually strangle it. This is known as a “girdling root.” Just dig back the soil around the stem and make sure the roots all head outward, away from the trunk before you buy it.
Or, give us a call and we’ll pick out a good one and plant it for you – before the fall – so you can enjoy it this year!
